UFC Fight Night 148 Results: Pettis Shocks Wonderboy

By Justin Dohnson, The People's Red Head

Do you hear me knocking? Well, let me in! Finally! The People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

UFC Fight Night 148 took place at the Bridgestone Arena Saturday, March 23, 2019, in Nashville Tennessee. It was an interesting card with most bouts going the distance. The main event was Anthony Pettis versus Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. The co-main event was Curtis Blaydes versus Justin Willis.

Anthony Pettis defeats Stephen Thompson via second-round knock out

Let us dive right into it people. Pettis knocks out Wonderboy Thompson in round two, with a superman punch. What a win for Pettis who was struggling the last couple years with a 3-6 record. Pettis said he feels good at 170lbs, and this showed in the fight. While he looks forward to what is next for him, hoping that it is the winner of Edson Barboza vs. Justin Gaethje, or a rematch with Rafael dos Anjos, we will have more to come, as information becomes available.

Wonderboy does not have much to look forward to. The fall for Wonderboy has been as fast as his rise to the upper echelon of the sport. We are talking about a fighter who took former champion Tyron Woodley the distance twice. Wonderboy falls to 1-3-1 in his last five fights. Fans may forget he lost a controversial decision to Darren Till.

It is likely that Wonderboy will have to fight his way back into contention. We will keep you posted as more information on his next fight becomes available. It is worthy of note that this is Wonderboy’s first knock out loss of his career.

Curtis Blaydes defeats Justin Willis via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-25)

Blaydes redeems his loss to Francis Ngannou by dominating Justin Willis from start to finish. Willis talked a lot of trash leading up to the fight and it backfired. Blaydes will now move back up in the heavyweight division.

OTHER NOTIBLE RESULTS

John Makdessi defeats Jesus Pinedo by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

Jussier Formiga defeats Deiveson Figueiredo by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Luis Pena defeats Steven Peterson by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Maycee Barber defeats JJ Aldrich by way of second-round knock out

UFC 234 BREAKDOWN

Finally! The real People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

Melbourne, Australia played host to UFC 234, and what a night it was inside of Rod Laver Arena. We have the breakdown for our fans. Anderson “Spider” Silva was in action after a two-year hiatus. Anderson was in a real Donnybrook with Israel Adesanya that has our vote for early fight of the year candidate.

Our very own Weigh-In staff commented on Silva’s performance after such a long layoff:

Matt Ward - “Go Fuck Yourself!”

Luis Cortes - Not available for comment and not returning my calls on an uncomfortable rate now.

Steve Ward - Began yelling about when he sees me at Summer Slam brother, he is going to run wild all over me and Wooooooooooooo.

Everyone knows that Anderson is one of my favorite fighters of all time! I will try to refrain from my normal blowing of him, but just know a milk mustache towel sits beside me as the words hit this blog. Silva began the tilt by downloading Adesanya’s offense, which he later used to mount his own attack.

Silva began to go on the offensive more in the second round. Adesanya displayed a study stream of low kicks throughout rounds one and two. In round two, Silva really began to establish his jab as well as land a meaningful body kick. I thought round two was Silva’s best and Adesanya did land some meaningful shots, but Spider weathered them.

Adesanya took over in the third round and he was honestly the busier of the two throughout the match, and ended up winning via unanimous decision after three rounds.

Adesanya wins on scorecards:  (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

OTHER CARD RESULTS:

Ricky Simon extends his winning streak to three straight, defeating Rani Yahya by way of unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-25). This was a great fight with lots of sprawling and brawling.

Montana De La Rosa defeated Nadia Kassem by way of armbar in round two.

Jim Crute defeated Sam Alvey by way of TKO in the first round. Alvey took the fight on short notice like a champ to keep the card alive, but he could not handle the power of Crute.

UNDERCARD RESULTS:

Devonte Smith defeated Dong Hyun Ma by way of TKO at 3:53 of round one.

Shane Young defeated Austin Arnett by way of unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Kai Kara-France defeated Raulian Paiva (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) by way of split decision.

Kyung Ho Kang defeated Teruto Ishihara by way of submission in round one.

Lando Vannata defeated Marcos Mariano by way of submission (kimura) at 4:55 in round one.

Jalin Turner defeated Callan Potter via KO by way of strikes in the first round.

Jonathan Martinez defeated Wuliji Buren by way of unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

Dillashaw v. Henry Cejudo Ends in Premature Stoppage

Finally! The People’s Red Head has Come Back to the Weigh-In!

UFC Fight Night 143 came and went faster some of my buddies marriages. Dillashaw and Cejudo was no exception to the coming and going. This was scheduled as the main event, but ended 32 seconds into the first round. Many expert analysts among the sport are calling the stoppage premature, and The Weigh-In also feels the stoppage came a bit early.

When questioned about the stoppage, The Weigh-In’s own Matt Ward was quoted as saying, “Fuck You!” This is just a phrase he randomly leaves on my voicemail so do not read too much into it.

Luis Cortes was unfortunately not available for comment on the matter.

Steve Ward was not quoted but did provide lengthy commentary on new tracksuit trends for 2019, and did attempt to lube me up before undergoing an interview with me.

Entering the first round, Dillashaw was clipped as Cejudo came out aggressive and ready. Dillashaw was clearly dazed and wobbled, but there was nothing upon review that would lead anyone to believe he was knocked out or incapable of defending himself. Again, I am not one to ever argue against protecting the fighters but Dillashaw was not given a fair chance to recover. I would have liked to have seen what would have happened in the following 30 seconds, but we will never know.

After the bout, UFC President, Dana White stated he too felt the stoppage was early. Following the fight, Big John McCarthy told MMA Mania he would not have stopped the fight at the point it was stopped.

However, no matter what anyone feels, what is done is done. The results of this match leave a real sour taste in the mouth of many (insert joke here). Cejudo is coming off a preposterous win over Dimetrius Johnson. I say preposterous because Dimetrius was robbed by poor judging. Furthermore, I wish MMA would really take a page from the book of boxing in that, a champion needs to be convincingly dethroned to lose their belt.

Dillashaw goes through a grueling weight cut to fight Cejudo at 125lbs. All of the scrutiny regarding Dillashaw’s chin due to the weight cut should be easily dismissed. Cejudo’s onslaught of punches that dazed Dillashaw did not prove to be due to the weight cut. In fact, in my eyes Dillashaw looked better than ever and seemed to be going for a takedown, but was stopped immediately as Cejudo continued to swing away. Dillashaw later went on Joe Rogan’s podcast and admitted to being caught by good shots, but angered by the stoppage. Dillashaw should be angered. Has the man not proven himself at this point? Dillashaw put his body through an extreme cut in order to put 125 on the map and this result is how he gets rewarded. I think Dillashaw should be granted an immediate rematch.

Other UFC Fight Night 143 Results:

Allen Crowder defeated Greg Hardy due to stoppage from illegal knees in the second round

Gregor Gillespie defeated Yancy Medeiros by knockout in the second round

Joseph Benavidez defeated Dustin Ortiz by way of unanimous decision

Paige VanZant defeated Rachel Ostovich by submission in the second round

Glover Teixeira defeated Karl Roberson by submission in round one

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone defeated Alexander Hernandez by knockout in the second round  (WAY TO GO COWBOY!)

The Best of Halloween Havoc - WWE Top 10

In the spirit of Halloween, and some of our unhealthy obsessions with pro wrestling (*cough* Steve Ward *cough*), I ( more like the WWE Network and YouTube...) bring you the Best of Halloween Havoc. This highly entertaining WCW pay-per-view had its run between 1989 and 2000... My brother Steve and I have probably watched every one of these shows... Not live, but on VHS thanks to our local Aberdeen and Manahawkin, New Jersey Blockbuster stores back in the day.

This video brings back a ton of memories revolving around the "cheesy" Halloween gimmick matches like "unknown masked men" interfering in matches, electric chair bouts, and monster truck battles. It feels like just yesterday my brothers and I were watching WCW and beating the crap out of each other on Sunday afternoon after church at our grandma's house. I know... Nothing goes better with Roman Catholic religious ceremonies than juiced up men and women performing sports entertainment theater for millions of viewers, some of whom certainly lived in their parents' basements well into their 30s and collected Pokémon cards (*cough* Justin Dohnson *cough*).

That being said, I'm sure I speak for everyone at The Weigh-In when I say, Happy Halloween! Make sure to check your candy to ensure it has not been messed with... Justin Dohnson is still out there, and rumor has it, he is still angry about his fellow Irishman, Conor McGregor, losing recently... Who knows what he will do after having a good cry, drinking a bottle of Schnapps Sour Apple Pucker, and eating a box of Bon Bons... Don't say I didn't warn you!

Nurmagomedov Taps McGregor & Bedlam Ensues

Finally! The Real People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

Let me start off by saying my bold prediction of Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor was wrong. I did not account for Nurmagomedov laying on McGregor and zapping the life out of him. Even still, McGregor looked like he could have still done something in round four. However, as we all feared, Nurmagomedov proved too much on the ground.

Round one opened with good movement from both fighters. Nurmagomedov grabbed McGregor’s leg and it looked promising that McGregor may escape, but he was not able to. Round one ends with McGregor landing a stiff jab and Nurmagomedov sitting on him for the rest of the round. It was very boring but much anticipated.

Round two had a shocking moment, which was Nurmagomedov landing a punch that sent McGregor stumbling. However, even with minimal success in the stand up game, Nurmagomedov takes McGregor down and sits on him for the majority of the round.

Round three was McGregor’s round, and he showed what would happen if the fight remained on the feet. In round three, McGregor showed why he is one of the best strikers in MMA. McGregor landed multiple shots in round three and he could have even possibly won the round. I would give him the round but I might be biased... I am related to the man after all.

Round four had me crying and questioning everything I knew in life. Nurmagomedov takes McGregor down and though McGregor puts on a good fight, he gives up his back and Nurmagomedov wins by choke. The choke looked more like a neck crank but either way, it made McGregor tap.

Nurmagomedov then won and I was super bummed, due to my love for McGregor. However, as many of you know by now, the fight was not over. Nurmagomedov lost his mind and jumped cage, going after Dillon Danis who is one of McGregor’s training coaches. Danis is known as a ju jitsu specialist and is highly regarded in the world of MMA.

As if Nurmagomedov jumping the cage and starting a riot was not enough, one of Nurmagomedov’s entourage snuck into the cage and hit McGregor with a right hand. How despicable is this shit? This is worse than Steve taking a “plus sized” model out for a nice steak dinner and sneaking out of her place the next morning, only to never call her again.

McGregor remained gracious in defeat. He has even stated he will not press charges, something that Nurmagomedov is most likely not familiar with. I hope they have a rematch, but who knows what will happen due to Nurmagomedov’s actions after the win. Congratulations to Nurmagomedov. Like McGregor, I too am gracious when proven wrong.

Bold Prediction for McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov

Finally! The Real People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

McGregor allows Nurmagomedov to challenge him tonight. You fans of The Weigh-In are in for a special treat. You are not going to see the headlines that every other combat website has going on right now. We here at The Weigh-In pride ourselves on honest reporting without fear of consequences.

What I am referring to is the fact that every other news outlet is referring to this as the biggest fight of all time. Give me a fucking break. If this match ends up breaking any records it has everything to do with McGregor’s star power and nothing to do with Nuragomedov. Honestly, as we find ourselves on the eve of the fight, I am still shocked it is happening. Are we actually going to see Nuragomedov be healthy and report for a major fight?

I take nothing away from Nuragomedov. It is no secret he is a fucking magician on the ground. However, if we truly breakdown these individuals, we have to discuss everything. Khabib has constantly folded under pressure, though his record may not reflect this fact. How soon we forget that Nuragomedov was slated to go against Tony Ferguson four different times. This match never happened due to a series of odd injuries and horrific weight cuts.

So let us all assume Nuragomedov makes it to the fight tonight and UFC 299 goes off without a hitch. What are we talking about now? I for one think, and I am willing to put it out there, McGregor wins! That is right, I am man enough to fucking pick a winner and put my name on it. I am not solely picking McGregor because we have so much in common and both are from Irish decent. Rest assured, the list of things McGregor and I have in common are fucking down right eerie. Please see my list below:

Both of us have huge wrenches
            Both have hot wives
            Both came to takeover
Both start the day off with a bowl of lucky charms
Both have pots of gold hidden all over the fucking globe

I am picking McGregor because he will once again prove that he is meant to be on the big stage and is one of the best students of mixed martial arts. Nuragomedov is likely to find himself in a similar situation as Eddie Alvarez, gun shy on the ultimate stage in a battle against the UFC’s biggest star. Let us also not forget McGregor is now fighting because it is in his blood.

Think about that last sentence people. McGregor is cashing more checks and breaking more necks than a helicopter salesman at the Catalina wine mixer. McGregor does not have to fight but he is choosing to fight. Everything the man touches turns to fucking gold. I personally hope that he is motivated by how big this event is. The size of this event has little if anything at all to do with Nuragomedov. It pains me to write it people, but it is true. Nuragomedov lost his fan base when the Ferguson fight was cancelled for a fourth time.

Now, he does little if anything to promote this fight. However, the comments he does make sound as if he thinks this is the biggest of the fight all time due to his star power. Other sites will not tell you that this is simply untrue. McGregor is a fucking star and Nuragomedov is someone we all admire but lets us down when it counts.

Let me actually get into to some fight styles regarding this pending bout. Nuragomedov is a ground specialist and if he takes McGregor down and smothers him, it will likely lead him to victory. The question in this fight is going to be one of whether or not Nuragomedov can get in to drag McGregor down. Everyone fears this matchup for McGregor but I think McGregor will rise to the challenge once again.

McGregor’s left cross has goodnight implications. In fact, his power is so dangerous that Will Smith is considering starring in a movie where he plays a physician with a terrible accent studying brain trauma in the individuals McGregor has put to sleep. We do not fact check people, but we do call it as we see it. Honestly, everything you read everywhere else does not matter. This fight will come down to who imposes their will. Do not buy into Nuragomedov having a much improved stand up because if he was focused on that during training camp, he has already lost.

McGregor does not participate in fights without knowing how to cut to the core of his opponents. DO not concern yourself with the ground game of McGregor. None of this shit matters. This fight comes down to the stage and movement of McGregor. With the tools that we all have seen from beginning, he sends Nuragomedov packing and then truly prepares for the biggest fight of all time, and it’s against Tony Ferguson.

McGregor wins by knockout in the second round, count on it. Justindamous has spoken…

COMBAT SPORT LOSES HALL OF FAMER AND NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT IT

Finally! The Real People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

Goodbye Dustin Johnson, Hello Justin Dohnson

I want to open by letting the people know that The Weigh-In’s own Matt Ward has made numerous attempts to censor The People’s Red Head. For those of you who know him, he was born to fucking dance and that is what he did all over Ward’s ass. However, due to this, he was asked to resign by the editor-in-chief. Your favorite red head, and editor-in-chief, has asked me, his twin brother to take his stead moving forward. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Justin Dohnson, and I am The Real People’s Red Head. I slid out of our mom two minutes before Dustin, and as such, I am his superior.

I will fill in for my brother until such time as the Weigh-In ceases their censorship of him. If fucking Gruber would stop writing convicts and start lobbying the Weigh-In for less censorship, my brother would have stayed, but alas, Gruber is most likely sitting around elbows deep in ink, befriending convicted felons across the globe. While it would be easy for me to dive into a debate on artistic integrity and my own disdain for censorship, this is not the time. It is not what my brother would have wanted for you all.

Steve Gruber's Penpal

While he looms somewhere secluded, mulling over life’s meaning, we lost a fucking soldier and no one seems to have paid attention. I was so personally grief stricken from the loss that I have not attended “cat yoga” in weeks. It is my duty to run with this torch and report to you all what really matters in the world of combat sports. The loss of this fucking animal meant so much to me that I have not personally prank called Steve Ward pretending to be various men lathered up in oils for months now. I have erectile comedy dysfunction. I cannot even find joy in disclosing how Matt and his lady friend are immersed in the furry community. Seriously, I walked in on them one time, and Matt was in a bunny costume looking like that fucking kid from A Christmas Story. For fuck sake guys, this is a family website!

Matt Ward of TWI

What Makes a Fighter Legendary?

So what makes a fighter legendary? I think everyone has his or her opinion of what makes a legend. For example, sometimes a fighter can be legendary but also have a reputation to be a head case. When a fighter gets labeled a head case does it mean we should not still mourn the loss? What about a fighter’s outside of the sport antics? To you the reader, how do you feel about personal flaws? Take time to evaluate that last question…

We all know human beings are less than perfect. In fact, if you know someone perfect, you are lying to yourself. Actually, my wife is perfect, but no one else. Listen! Go fuck yourselves everyone! My wife is perfect and she sometimes reads this blog, so this is my true position! When we evaluate fighters, do we accept them as they are? I think that flaws in fighters’ further cement or contribute to their legacy. Everyone knows Jon Jones has issues outside of the sport, but he is arguably the best MMA fighter in the world. Let us not even forget about Mike Tyson. He was arguably the most dominant heavyweight boxer of all time, and we all know what he went through out of the ring. The list goes on and on, but how do you feel?

Johnson Family Portrait

While I myself am not one for conspiracies, why else are people ignoring the death of the greatest MMA fighter of all time? His rise was meteoric. His reign survived multiple promotions and multiple leagues. If this were not enough, he went on to be arguably the greatest MMA coach of all time. He gave his life to the sport and now we go silent when he needs us most.

Being a twin means I think a lot like my brother. We all know that he is not heavy into rankings and is a fan of taking on all challengers. I too share his same insight regarding never backing down from a challenge. This is one of the reasons I am floored that we lost a fucking a legend and no fuss has been raised. No tribute has taken place to date. To me, this screams injustice. How can we ignore a competitor who gave his all during his entire career? Is it not enough that he was former champion of multiple leagues and various weight classes?

Dustin and Justin - Age Five

I can feel what you are all thinking, and let me address it. Sure, this legend liked his booze. I also would not deny that later in his career he may have nursed his wounds through the abuse of painkillers. I would not dare to pretend that this fighter was not a womanizer, and had a somewhat complicated relationship with his children. However, the aforementioned vices are what further made this man legendary. When the lights went down, he was able to put all personal distractions aside. He was an artist and the ring was his canvas. He shut everything out to ensure that he was the victor each night he entered into competition. His tunnel vision is what made him truly unique.

I can see that most of you still doubt the legendary prowess of this man, so let us evaluate some of the names this legend defeated. He went out with a split decision against another legend, Matt Hughes. That marks the second time Hughes went down to this legend. Also falling victim to this legend were the following:  Mark Shamrock, Ryan Wheeler, Michael Oxfat, Frank Reynolds, Darius Widener, Kevin McCallister, Pete Eckhart, Chad Barthel, and many more.

The next argument I hear regarding the stunning silence surrounding this fighter’s passing is that times have changed; the sport is more competitive now than when he was fighting. If we were going to use that logic, we might as well not celebrate Michael Jordan people. Sports are constant and always evolving, there is no argument there. I think we can all agree that sports are fluid. Combat sports are evolving before our very own eyes. However, when you are dominant during your time, the playing field is level during your era. Due to this, I think he is arguably the greatest fighter of all time, which it why the silence surrounding his death pains me.

After his legendary fight career, he opened a gym, and not just any gym. This man is responsible for the Navy Street Bullies, some of the most feared fighters in the game. Joe Daddy Stevenson trained and coached there. Let us not forget that current champion Ryan Wheeler fights of out this gym. In addition to that, he raised two incredible sons who have had notable career highlights in MMA. This legendary champion had success after fighting, which is not the easiest feat to accomplish.

So for the final time, I ask why the fuck is no one talking about a legend? The sport will never be the same. August 2, 2017 marks the shock felt all across the world of MMA. If no one else will pay tribute to you, I got you Alvey. I am here letting the world know that you were a fucking stud who took on all challengers. What distracted you outside of the ring is what made you so brilliant inside the ring. Know that wherever you are, we thank you for everything you gave us.

For those of you confused by this piece, we lost Alvey Kulina, legendary MMA fighter/coach. Kingdom was cancelled back in 2017, and its final episode aired on August 2, 2017. With the recent one-year anniversary of the shows cancellation, we here at the Weigh-in still mourn. We think about what could have been, and we are left with unanswered questions.

Thank you Frank Grillo (aka Alvey Kulina) for giving us three years of your everything. Your dedication and commitment to your craft are an inspiration to us all. In addition to being first team all body, we thank you for a fucking masterpiece. We thank you for the realism you brought into our homes for three years.

***No one died during the publication of this piece. Kingdom was a television series folks.
