UFC Fight Night 148 Results: Pettis Shocks Wonderboy

Do you hear me knocking? Well, let me in! Finally! The People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

UFC Fight Night 148 took place at the Bridgestone Arena Saturday, March 23, 2019, in Nashville Tennessee. It was an interesting card with most bouts going the distance. The main event was Anthony Pettis versus Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. The co-main event was Curtis Blaydes versus Justin Willis.

Anthony Pettis defeats Stephen Thompson via second-round knock out

Let us dive right into it people. Pettis knocks out Wonderboy Thompson in round two, with a superman punch. What a win for Pettis who was struggling the last couple years with a 3-6 record. Pettis said he feels good at 170lbs, and this showed in the fight. While he looks forward to what is next for him, hoping that it is the winner of Edson Barboza vs. Justin Gaethje, or a rematch with Rafael dos Anjos, we will have more to come, as information becomes available.

Wonderboy does not have much to look forward to. The fall for Wonderboy has been as fast as his rise to the upper echelon of the sport. We are talking about a fighter who took former champion Tyron Woodley the distance twice. Wonderboy falls to 1-3-1 in his last five fights. Fans may forget he lost a controversial decision to Darren Till.

It is likely that Wonderboy will have to fight his way back into contention. We will keep you posted as more information on his next fight becomes available. It is worthy of note that this is Wonderboy’s first knock out loss of his career.

Curtis Blaydes defeats Justin Willis via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-25)

Blaydes redeems his loss to Francis Ngannou by dominating Justin Willis from start to finish. Willis talked a lot of trash leading up to the fight and it backfired. Blaydes will now move back up in the heavyweight division.

John Makdessi defeats Jesus Pinedo by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

Jussier Formiga defeats Deiveson Figueiredo by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Nurmagomedov Taps McGregor & Bedlam Ensues

Finally! The Real People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

Let me start off by saying my bold prediction of Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor was wrong. I did not account for Nurmagomedov laying on McGregor and zapping the life out of him. Even still, McGregor looked like he could have still done something in round four. However, as we all feared, Nurmagomedov proved too much on the ground.

Round one opened with good movement from both fighters. Nurmagomedov grabbed McGregor’s leg and it looked promising that McGregor may escape, but he was not able to. Round one ends with McGregor landing a stiff jab and Nurmagomedov sitting on him for the rest of the round. It was very boring but much anticipated.

Round two had a shocking moment, which was Nurmagomedov landing a punch that sent McGregor stumbling. However, even with minimal success in the stand up game, Nurmagomedov takes McGregor down and sits on him for the majority of the round.

Round three was McGregor’s round, and he showed what would happen if the fight remained on the feet. In round three, McGregor showed why he is one of the best strikers in MMA. McGregor landed multiple shots in round three and he could have even possibly won the round. I would give him the round but I might be biased... I am related to the man after all.

Round four had me crying and questioning everything I knew in life. Nurmagomedov takes McGregor down and though McGregor puts on a good fight, he gives up his back and Nurmagomedov wins by choke. The choke looked more like a neck crank but either way, it made McGregor tap.

Nurmagomedov then won and I was super bummed, due to my love for McGregor. However, as many of you know by now, the fight was not over. Nurmagomedov lost his mind and jumped cage, going after Dillon Danis who is one of McGregor’s training coaches. Danis is known as a ju jitsu specialist and is highly regarded in the world of MMA.

As if Nurmagomedov jumping the cage and starting a riot was not enough, one of Nurmagomedov’s entourage snuck into the cage and hit McGregor with a right hand. How despicable is this shit? This is worse than Steve taking a “plus sized” model out for a nice steak dinner and sneaking out of her place the next morning, only to never call her again.

McGregor remained gracious in defeat. He has even stated he will not press charges, something that Nurmagomedov is most likely not familiar with. I hope they have a rematch, but who knows what will happen due to Nurmagomedov’s actions after the win. Congratulations to Nurmagomedov. Like McGregor, I too am gracious when proven wrong.

Dustin's Corner: Dustin Poirier Stops Anthony Pettis at UFC Fight Norfolk

Finally! The People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In.

Pettis tapped harder than Gregory Hines in the third round of his lightweight matchup against Dustin Poirier. The fight was a bloody a battle that ended when Pettis tapped in the third round due to what appeared to be some sort of rib injury. Following the fight, Pettis’ coach confirmed Pettis fractured a rib.

What a shame for Pettis who has bounced between weight classes ever since losing his belt at UFC 185 to Rafael dos Anjos. Pettis was bloodied by elbows, but was still very much in the fight. In fact, Pettis looked very quick and some great wrestling was on display in rounds two and three of the bout.

Poirier cut Pettis open with multiple elbows. However, Pettis continued to fight until the end. While Poirier was in the mount position in the third round, Pettis twisted to escape and immediately tapped. For Poirier, this marked his second straight win against top talent under odd circumstances.

Fans may recall that his previous victory against Eddie Alvarez was due to an illegal knee, and ruled as a no contest, but Poirier considers this a win. I am not sure what qualifies as a win anymore, but one thing I do know, Poirier considers everything not a loss to be a win.

Following his match with Pettis, Poirier claimed Pettis did not suffer a broken rib, but was suffering from broken spirit. As usual, the trash talk flied following the bell. Pettis has been pretty silent since the injury, and we have not received any sort of turnaround time for his return.

However, during the post fight interview, Poirier claimed he is going to fight the winner of Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez. Weeks later, we have seen nothing confirming that Poirier would be awarded the winner of this pending match.

For Pettis, there will be some considerable rehab, as rib injuries always prove tricky to overcome. Additionally, he will have to weigh his options, but I feel he still looks great in the lightweight division.

For Poirier, what can be said, other than he has the best first name in the history of man. I am flattered that his parents named him after me. While there is no confirmation that he will fight the winner of Gaethje and Alvarez, there is certainly an argument to be made that he is deserving of said winner.
