Hall of Fame Referee Steve Smoger Interview

By Matt Ward

I recently interviewed long-time boxing referee, Steve "Double S" Smoger. Steve and I discussed his career both in and out of the boxing ring. Smoger has served as a referee for over 200 world title bouts, and holds the distinction of traveling to more states and countries than any other boxing referee over the course of the sport's long history. He also served as an attorney, judge, and reserve components Air Force officer during his career.

Although he is still active, Smoger has been inducted into five different boxing halls of fame including the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame (1997), the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame (2013), the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame (2014), the International Boxing Hall of Fame (2015), and the Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame (2017).

The Weigh-In Podcast Episode #14

The fourteenth episode of The Weigh-In Podcast features my interview with boxing writer and historian, Frederick V. Romano.

Romano is the author of The Golden Age of Boxing on Radio and Television: A Blow-by-Blow History from 1921 to 1964. In this book, Romano explores the many roles that each medium played in both the development and the depiction of the sport. Principal among the topics covered are the ever-changing role of technology during the four-decade-plus period, how it impacted the manner in which the sport was presented to its public audience, the exponential growth of those audiences, and the influence radio and television had on the financial aspects of the sport, including the selective use of radio and television and the financial boom that the mediums created.

The Golden Age of Boxing on Radio and Television: A Blow-by-Blow History from 1921 to 1964 is available for purchase online through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
