Bellator Grand Prix Update

Finally! The People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

Your favorite red head just got back from another relaxing long weekend at Steve Gruber's spa in Scottsdale, Arizona. He personally ensured I was rubbed down day after day. I did not even find it odd that he wore a postal uniform in lieu of official spa get up. As I always say, to each their own.

With that out of the way, lets dive into a Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix update. Last we left off, Bader defeated King Mo. The People’s Red Head will be the first to admit when he is wrong, unlike Steve Gruber. How soon we forget that we cannot baby oil ourselves up and threaten to suplex our parents without real life consequences. I had King Mo getting to the finals, and congratulations to Ryan Bader.

I should have known Bader was going to make quick work of Mo. I used to go the same cryotherapy facility as Bader, not a big deal. Bader disposed of Mo in 15 seconds. What is scary, he looks even better since leaving the UFC. He is now set to take on tournament favorite, Matt Mitrione. Mitrione is going to be Bader’s toughest Bellator challenge to date. Their bout is set for October 12, 2018. This fight is set to take place at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card will air and stream live on Paramount and DAZN. If you all behave, maybe we at the Weigh-In will do a preview leading up this bout.

The other side of the semifinal contains a bout between Chael Sonnen and Fedor Emelianenko. This is a match that Sonnen wanted way before the Bellator Grand Prix even existed. Emelianenko advanced by knocking out Frank Mir, which again, stunned The People’s Red Head. Mir was on that “tainted meat” leading up to that bout and I for one thought it was going to give him an edge. The moral of the story, stay off drugs kids.

Emelianenko will face Sonnen on October 13, 2018, at Bellator 208. This fight will take place at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y. (on Long Island). The main card will air and stream live on Paramount and DAZN. Sonnen is sure to deliver some good sound bites leading up to this bout. He has beef with Emelianenko, and has been very vocal regarding how worthless Emelianenko is when it comes to fight promotion.

I stick by my pre-tournament prediction, Mitrione to take it all. Depending on what Sonnen shows up, Emelianenko may have enough in the tank to defeat Sonnen. I predict that he does exactly that, but I have been wrong before. Until next time, go Fuck Yourself, San Diego!

Kimbo Slice Film Update

For those of you following the development of the upcoming Kimbo Slice film, Backyard Legend, we have an update for you!

Anthony D'Alessandro of Yahoo Entertainment reported that Winston Duke, who recently starred in the critically acclaimed film "Black Panther," will play Slice. Duke played T’Challa’s ally M’Baku in the recent Marvel Studios' blockbuster films Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.

(Duke as M'Baku)

Kimbo Slice was a Bahamian-born cage fighter, boxer, wrestler, and actor who rose to popularity in combat sports circles by fighting in several street fights that were posted on the internet. His professional MMA career began on November 10, 2007 when he fought and defeated Bo Cantrell on the EliteXC: Renegade card in Corpus Christi, TX. He went on to fight seven more times on EliteXC, UFC, and Bellator cards. His final MMA fight took place on February 19, 2016, just months before his untimely death on June 6th at the age of 42. Slice also fought seven professional boxing matches between 2011 and 2013, in which he went undefeated. His death was determined to be caused by heart failure. Slice left behind six children and a fiancé.

(Kimbo Slice)

The film is being produced by Steve Lee Jones’ Bee Holder Productions and Michael J. Weiss’ Webros Entertainment. The release date is yet to be determined.

For more information on this film, check out D'Alessandro's article, "'Black Panther's' Winston Duke Jumping In The Cage As MMA Fighter Kimbo Slice In 'Backyard Legend'"

Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix Update Following Mir vs. Fedor

Finally! The People’s Red Head has Come Back to The Weigh-In!

While it has been awhile since the People’s Red Head has graced The Weigh-In with his presence, you are still welcome that I have decided to return. You have all been given a gift during my silence. That gift comes in the form of aerial assaults, spandex, and baby oil. I am of course referring to the contribution from our very own Steve Ward. His wrestling articles have been great, and it’s real to him, damn it!

It is time for another update of the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix. Mir vs. Fedor took place April 28, 2018, in Illinois. Unfortunately, the hype leading up to the fight lasted longer than the actual fight. However, both men showed why they are worthy of their legendary status.

Fedor won by TKO, 48 seconds into round one. If we were talking about Matt Ward’s sexual stamina, this would be fives times that, and we would be celebrating. It is not that the fight was disappointing, quite the opposite. To the surprise of many, Mir came out swinging. When you are the aggressor, you often run the risk of giving your opponent openings. This is exactly what happened in this fight.

Fedor showed his true form by clipping Mir behind the ear and landing two more punches that led to the referee calling a stop to the fight. For Fedor, it further cements his place in history. For Mir, it adds to his allure. The career of Mir has been one where he has faced all challengers.

Following the fight, Chael Sonnen was forced to enter promotion mode, as he will be Fedor’s next opponent. For the silver tongued Sonnen, we could tell it was unsuspected, as his banter seemed forced, and not true to his normal form. It is always difficult to leave the booth without notice and start promoting, especially when you are caught off guard.

We will continue to keep you updated as the tournament progresses. Stay tuned for further updates from The Weigh-In.

Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix Update

Finally! The People’s Red Head has Come Back to The Weigh-In!

We here at The Weigh-In wanted to provide an update on what is going on with the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament. This tournament promised to be an action packed tournament, in a winner advances format that would ultimately lead to the Heavyweight Title. In the first match of the tournament Chael Sonnen won over Rampage Jackson.

We now have another fighter who advanced. Matt Mitrione won a decision against “Big Country” Roy Nelson. For Mitrione, this win avenged an earlier loss he suffered to Nelson during his UFC days. Mitrione utilized his reach advantage and kept his distance, which ultimately led to his victory at Bellator 194.

You may recall, we here at The Weigh-In previously predicted if Mitrione got past Nelson, he would win the Grand Prix Tournament. Our opinion most likely does not shock the masses. Last we checked, every ragtag sports site has Mitrione favored. When it comes to the Bellator Heavyweight division, most believe no one can hang with Mitrione’s stuff. The man pisses excellence. It is rumored that mosquitoes will not bite Mitrione out of respect. We here at The Weigh-In do not fact check people, we just report what we hear, and it is why you love us.

Mitrione is now set to take on the winner of the King Mo versus Ryan Bader. The Weigh-In crew suspects King Mo will be victorious, but we hope it is a great fight. There is a lot of buzz out of the Bader camp that Ryan is out to win this whole thing and show the world his level of talent. King Mo is just a bad man with bad intentions. This match is scheduled to take place on May 12, 2018 at Bellator 199. This is a must watch for all MMA fans out there.

The next scheduled tournament fight is rapidly approaching. Frank Mir is set to take on Fedor Emelianenko. This fight has all the trappings of an instant classic. Both men may be full of more tainted meat than Canelo and the Ward Brothers freezer combined. Both Mir and Fedor are out to prove their best days are not behind them. Mir has proven he still has a lot left in the tank as he enters the twilight of his career. Fedor wants to add to his historic resume by winning another title. Tune in on April 28, 2018 to see Mir take on Fedor.

Keep tuning into The Weigh-In for Bellator Grand Prix results. We will continue to follow this tournament until a champion is crowned. In the meantime, we will resume ignoring pornographic materials because we are all sweet boys.

Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix

Finally! The People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

With the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix underway, we here at The Weigh-In felt it would be a good time to evaluate the bracket. In addition, we want to address MMA tournaments and their value to the sport.

Bellator’s bracket breaks down as follows:
  1. Quinton Jackson vs. Chael Sonnen (Jan. 20, 2018)
  2. Fedor Emelianenko vs. Frank Mir (April 28, 2018)
  3. Matt Mitrione vs. Roy Nelson (Feb. 16, 2018)
  4. Ryan Bader vs. Muhammed Lawal (May 12, 2018)
Chael Sonnen won a unanimous decision against “Rampage” Jackson at Bellator 192. Chael is labeled one of the best, if not the best, trash talker in all of the sport. However, many are critical of his victory against Jackson. Many analysts and fans considered the fight boring and lackluster. However, this tournament consists of older fighters who have not been heavily active as of late. There will definitely be some ring or octagon rust among the competitors.

Sonnen is set to take on the winner of the Emelianenko vs. Mir fight, that takes place in April. Seeing Mir back in action will be a treat for MMA fans. This will be his first fight since leaving the UFC. While many feel Fedor is past his prime, this fight could have potential fireworks, as both men are out to prove that their best days are not behind them.

On the other side of the bracket, we have Matt Mitrione, who Sonnen said is the favorite to win it all. Analysts also agree, as Mitrione was released as the favorite for betting purposes. I do not disagree. Mitrione was one of the biggest names to defect from the UFC after what I deem to be a bullshit loss to Travis Brown. For those that have a short memory, or like my grandmother suffer from dementia, Brown eye gouged Mitrione twice during that fight. In addition, the referee of that fight handled everything wrong. I will not go into it, but as a wise man once said, go to the game tape!

Mitrione has knock out power, a well-rounded ground game, bedroom eyes, and dynamite thighs. That is a paraphrased quote that came from The Weigh-In’s own, Matthew Ward. At one point, Ward asked me to ask Mitrione how much a thigh master was involved in his daily training routine. I am still waiting for Mitrione’s people to get back to me, simmer down Ward.

Many felt that even with the hiccup against Brown, Mitrione had all the tools to put the UFC belt around his waist. However, after the suspect loss to Brown, Mitrione’s UFC contract fell apart during re-negotiations. We now find ourselves watching him ascend the Bellator Heavyweight division. Nelson may prove to be Mitrione’s toughest competition in the tournament. This fight in the tournament will mark Nelson’s first appearance in Bellator since leaving the UFC. Should Mitrione get by Nelson, it is likely that Mitrione could cruise to victory in the tournament.

The last match has Ryan Bader pitted against Muhammed Lawal. This fight may be one of the most intriguing in the tournament. Bader was at one time among the top of the UFC Heavyweight division before suffering a loss to Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. However, Bader has a win in Bellator under his belt, and feels he is coming into his own.

Muhammed Lawal aka “King Mo” has other plans for Bader. King Mo is looking right past Bader and feels that no one in the tournament can handle him. He was ringside during the Sonnen’s victory over Rampage and felt neither Sonnen or Rampage was in proper shape. He also had some other choice things to say, none of them flattering. His words cut like a knife. It reminds me of when I go home for the holidays and the entire family tells me that I appear to have gained weight during the course of the year.

With the bracket broken down, we want to know what the fans of MMA think. Is there a place for these types of tournaments? Many critics of the sport say that this tournament is a joke and features aging fighters who are on the decline. I vehemently disagree. I cannot wait to watch the upper echelon of the sport in action.

I think the bracket contains hall of famers who still have more to prove. Let me tell you all a little story about a guy everyone said was done. His name is Mike Tyson. Maybe you have heard of him. After dominating boxing, he went to prison, which we all still call bullshit on! Robin was asking for it, but that is neither here nor there. Spare me the hash tags of “me too” people. The People’s Red Head does not care.

Anyway, cut to 2009, when a little film called The Hangover was released. Mike gets a small role in that film and knocks it out of the park. He proceeds to make amends with many in the boxing world, releases an incredible documentary, and propels himself back into the public eye. Mike remains respected and cherished by fans of the sweet science.

I would say that I appreciate the tournament format Bellator is creating. For one, it is a great way to crown a champion and progress fighters’ rankings. Look at all the interim champion belts being created in the UFC. The entire UFC with the exception of a few weight categories is a mess. No one can sort out the rankings, and the champions get to sit on their belts without defending them in a timely manner. A tournament format is one way to avoid this. Interim titles mean nothing people.

After writing this piece, to prove my point, I am having an interim Red Head Champion belt made for myself. Who have I defeated to win this title you may ask, the answer is the following:  Wendy of Wendy’s, Carrot Top, Opie Taylor, Richie Cunningham, Lindsay Lohan, and other gingers. If anyone deserves a title that has little to no meaning, it is me. I have made it through life as a pasty ginger, and live to tell my tale each week on The Weigh-In. You are all welcome.

The Fight Everyone Missed

Finally! The People’s Redhead has come back to The Weigh-In!

On January 20, 2018, UFC 220 aired on pay-per-view and featured Stipe Miocic vs. Francis Ngannou. This is a fight we will get into later. However, there was another fight that everyone should have watched on this same evening, but seemed to miss. Former UFC phenom, Rory MacDonald took on Douglas Lima with the Welterweight Championship on the line at Bellator 192.

Since joining Bellator, the expectations for MacDonald have been gold or bust. At 192, Rory claimed Welterweight gold, but it was anything less than routine. Douglas Lima gave MacDonald all he could handle during their championship bout. This fight really displayed how Bellator has bridged the gap between themselves and the UFC. There is no lower class fighter sitting around in Bellator, and anyone who says otherwise is just plain mistaken.

For fans that thought Rory looked lackluster, please realize what the fuck you are talking about. As Joe Rogan would say, "Douglas Lima is a legit savage." Matt Ward of The Weigh-In had to wear his adult diapers while watching this fight. Lima’s leg kicks are world class, and the knockout power in his hands is confirmed. It appeared as the fight went on, MacDonald may have once again suffered a broken nose.

("Adult diapers can be cool." -Anonymous)

On top of enduring what may have been a broken nose, Lima supplied a steady dose of leg kicks, which had a tremendous affect on MacDonald as the fight went on. In fact, in the third-round, Lima landed a leg kick that put McDonald down on the canvas. MacDonald’s leg looked like a wet pillow that was run over by a football team, wearing cleats. Fortunately, in round four, MacDonald was able to take the fight back down to the canvas, where he out pointed Lima.

(A wet pillow)

MacDonald said after the fight, "he’s the best guy I’ve ever fought.” This comment comes from a man who has faced Stephen Thompson, Tyron Woodley, and Robbie Lawler. MacDonald gave Lima well-deserved high praise. MacDonald once again showed his well-rounded skill by adapting his attack during the course of the fight. When standup did not go MacDonald’s way, he did not shy away from taking the match to the ground, where he outpointed Lima. MacDonald won by judges’ scores of 49-48, 49-45, 49-46.

For MacDonald, this is a goal accomplished. He is now exactly what he set out to become: champion. We will have to see who Bellator lines up for his first title defense. Make no mistake, with hardware around MacDonald’s waist, and the path it has taken him to get there, this writer does not see him relinquishing his championship status anytime soon.
