Claressa Shields vs. Tori Nelson

2018 will kick off with a solid boxing card from Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY on January 12th. This card, which will be televised on Showtime, features a main event super middleweight women's bout between two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Claressa Shields (4-0, 2 KOs) and Tori Nelson (17-0-3, 2 KOs). Shields will defend her IBF/WBC Women's Super Middleweight Title against the undefeated veteran fighter, Nelson. Shields, who is coming off a TKO victory over Nikki Adler (16-1, 9 KOs) in August, looks to continue her ascent towards boxing stardom by defeating yet another tough opponent in the women's ranks of professional boxing. The 41-year-old Nelson, who defeated Latashia Burton (4-10) in November, looks to capture her first IBF title over a professional career that has spanned just under eight years. Nelson is arguably best remembered for her May 17, 2014 victory over women's boxing legend, Mia St. John (49-14-2, 19 KOs) for the Women's International Boxing Association World Welterweight Title.

The following bouts are also scheduled for this exciting night of boxing from Verona:

Jesse Angel Hernandez (10-1, 7 KOs) vs. Ernesto Garza (9-2, 5 KOs) - ten rounds, junior featherweights

Christina Hammer (22-0, 10 KOs) vs. Lisa Noel Garland (15-9, 8 KOs) - ten rounds, female middleweights

Shohjahon Ergashev (10-0) vs. Sonny Fredrickson (18-0, 12 KOs) - eight rounds, junior welterweights

Apti Davtaev (13-0-1, 13 KOs) vs. Craig Lewis (14-1-1, 8 KOs) - eight rounds, heavyweights

Nick Brinson (19-4-2, 9 KOs) vs. Taneal Goyco (9-10-1, 4 KOs) - six or eight rounds, super middleweights

Bakhtiyar Eyubov (13-0, 11 KOs) vs. Maurice Chalmers (14-13-1, 8 KOs) - six or eight rounds, junior welterweights

Danny Garcia vs. Brandon Rios

Danny Garcia (33-1, 19 KOs) will square off against Brandon Rios (34-3-1, 25 KOs) at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV on February 17, 2018. Garcia, a former super lightweight and welterweight world champion, is looking to bounce back after a tough split decision defeat to Keith Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs) in March at Barclay's Center in Brooklyn. Rios, a long-time contender in the lightweight and welterweight divisions, most recently defeated Aaron Herrera (33-8-1, 22 KOs) by way of knockout in June of this year.

The card will also feature David Benavidez (19-0, 17 KOs) making his first defense of his WBC World Super Middleweight Title against Ronald Gavril (18-2, 14 KOs). This fight is a rematch of the September 8th bout in which Benavidez captured the vacant title by defeating Gavril by split decision at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Boxers Bizarre Antics Get Him Knocked Out?

Can we give this fighter ten cool points for his entrance music? Coolio "Gangsta's Paradise"... Our very own Dustin Johnson still tears up when that song comes on the radio. It was playing at the 1996 Spring Fling Dance at Kalamazoo High School in Michigan when Charlotte Wagner dumped him for the high school's starting quarterback (we love you Big Red!).

DiBella Entertainment Presents Broadway Boxing: Season's Beatings - Thursday, December 14th (New York City)

The opening bout of the evening featured heavyweights, George Arias (10-0, 6 KOs) and Juan Goode (8-8, 6 KOs) in a fight that was scheduled for six rounds. Goode, who weighed in almost 20 pounds heavier than Arias, appeared soft in the abdomen and arguably out of shape for this contest. The first round of this bout was slow and uneventful with few punches thrown by the fighters. In the second round, Arias connected with a left hook that sent Goode to one knee. Goode, who was unable to recover from the punch, was counted out at 2:19 of the second round. Arias won his fourth straight bout by knockout, while Goode's record now stands at .500.

Hurshidbek Normatov (5-0, 2 KOs) fought Nicklaus Flaz (5-1, 4 KOs) in a six round welterweight bout. Both fighters stepped into the ring looking to preserve their undefeated records. This was evident in the first round when both men exchanged hard punches in the neutral corner of the ring. In the second round, Flaz landed a big right hook that backed his taller opponent up into the blue corner. Normatov, who displayed good defense throughout the bout, wisely covered up to prevent further damage. Flaz landed big hooks throughout the bout and "smiled off" some of Normatov's big shot in the second and third rounds. Flaz, who had previously been warned about low blows, was deducted a point in the fourth round. Normatov, who was clearly frustrated by the frequency of these cheap shots, connected on a big shot to the body after the bell marking the end of the fourth round rang. Flaz landed a big upper cut in the fifth round that forced his opponent to cover up again. Unfortunately for the Puerto Rican fighter, he did not learn his lesson about low blows earlier in the bout. Flaz was again deducted a point in the fifth round, after a low blow sent Normatov collapsing to the canvas. Both fighters appeared exhausted in the final round, but mustered up enough strength to throw a series of sloppy punches to end the match. The judges scored the bout 59-53, 58-54, and 57-55 all in favor of the winner by unanimous decision, Hurshidbek Normatov.

Montenegrin superstar, Dejan Zlaticanin (23-1, 16 KOs) began his trip on the comeback trail last night in New York City. The former WBC World Lightweight Champion, who suffered his first loss last January to Mikey Garcia, fought Colombia's Hevinson Herrera (22-14-1, 16 KOs) in a junior welterweight bout that was scheduled for eight rounds. In the first round, Zlaticanin cornered Herrera and finished him off with a brutal series of straight left hands that sent Herrera to the ground for the ten count. The stoppage came at the 1:57 mark of the first round. Zlaticanin celebrated his knockout victory with former world champ and trainer, James "Buddy" McGirt.

The fourth bout of the evening featured, welterweights Larry Fryers (aka Lawrence Gleeson) (6-0, 2 KOs) and Charles Natal (9-1-2, 3 KOs) in a six round battle of undefeated prospects, and "fight of the night" candidate. From the outset, the two men seemed evenly matched, and fought a crowd pleasing bout. The two fighters felt each other out in the first round, with Fryers effectively using his jab. The action picked up in the second round when Fryers answered the bell on the offensive. He backed his opponent into the ropes with body shots. Later in the round, Natal made a statement by landing a hard left hand to the Fryers' head. Fryers controlled the third and fourth rounds by landing the cleaner shots. Swelling under Natal's left eye appeared to give him problems in the second half of the contest. The two men brawled in the sixth round, which was highlighted by a Fryers' big right hook to Natal's body that pushed the Puerto Rican into the ropes. Fryers later landed a big overhand right to the head that reminded Natal that the fight was not over yet. The judges scored the bout 60-54 twice, and 59-55 all in favor of the winner by unanimous decision, Larry Fryers.

The women's middleweight bout that was scheduled between Alicia Napoleon (8-1, 5 KOs) and Sydney LeBlanc (4-5-1) was cancelled due to LeBlanc failing a pre-fight physical. Promoter, Lou DiBella told the crowd that LeBlanc's failed physical was the result of her efforts to cut weight too close to the contest. Napoleon, who is signed to DiBella Entertainment, promised the crowd that she would be in action again after the New Year. DiBella and Napoleon also hinted at ongoing negotiations to schedule the Lindenhurst, NY native in a women's title fight.

The original main event between WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight Champion, Patrick Day (14-2-1, 6 KOs) and Wesley Tucker (14-1, 8 KOs) was cancelled due to Tucker's recent arrest for an undisclosed reason in the days leading up to this card.

The main event of the evening featured undefeated lightweights, Will Madera (11-0-1, 5 KOs) and Wesley Ferrer (12-0-1, 7 KOs). Ferrer, a Brooklyn native, was the overwhelming crowd favorite over the course of the eight round bout. The fighters spent much of the first round feeling each other out. In the second round, the two fighters exchanged punches in what would end up being a closely scored bout. A lightning fast Ferrer left hook in the fifth round appeared to hurt his opponent. By the end of the sixth round, it was evident that neither man would running away with this bout on the judges' scorecards. Ferrer landed hard left and right hooks to Madera's head in the seventh round, but the tough Albany native fought back. A brutal exchange in the center of the ring, in which Madera threw a series of big overhand rights, got the crowd on their feet in the seventh round. A hard fought eight and final round led to the judges scoring the bout, 77-75 for Ferrer, 77-75 for Madera, and 76-76 a draw. The fight ended in a split decision draw, with both men preserving their unbeaten streaks.

Dustin's Corner: UFC 218 Breakdown

Finally! The People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

Last weekend was a big weekend in MMA as UFC 218 got underway in the homeland of The People’s Red Head. Brand new Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan hosted a dynamite UFC 218 fight card.

The main event was Holloway vs. Aldo II. We are not one to spread rumors, but Aldo has never been the same since the UFC adopted their strict anti-doping policy. You did not hear this from us though. We are sure that everyone prior to the anti-doping age was on the level. By level, we are referring to the Jersey Shore level of Matthew Ward, whom is seen with syringes hanging out of his ass from time to time. (J/K)

(Matt Ward - Not Pictured)

Holloway vs. Aldo II

As many already know, Holloway previously defeated Aldo, but Aldo was granted a rematch for some odd reason. The second fight was everything the fans wanted, with the outcome that was pretty much expected. A three round war ensued, and this fight is now a candidate for fight of the year.

The match opened with Aldo looking good. Aldo threw heavy hands and was landing well. Aldo’s defense also looked good and he was able to avoid most of Holloway’s attacks in rounds one and two. However, much like their first fight, Aldo did not throw his legendary leg kicks, which experts felt would be his key to victory in the rubber match.

By the third round, Aldo slowed, and Holloway looked fresher than the Snuggle Bear during a Downy commercial. Holloway eventually found a home for his attack on Aldo’s face. Holloway earned a third-round stoppage due to punches. If you did not know, Holloway is an animal. He has won 12 straight inside the octagon.

Holloway looks to be tougher than my mother’s overcooked beef during Friday night dinner. One of the dream fights we all want is Holloway vs. McGregor. However, in the post fight interview, Holloway advised his fans that he is operating under the assumption that McGregor will not be returning to the octagon. We can all still dream though.

Alistair Overeem took on Francis Ngannou

This was the co-main event at UFC 218. Overeem, the former champ was looking to regain his position in the top of the division. However, Ngannou has other plans for the hall of famer. Ngannou ended Overeem’s night at 1:42 of round one with a devastating left hook. The hook hit Overeem so hard, that I evacuated my own bowels due to the blow.

Ngannou has put the division and the world on notice. This man is dangerous and highly skilled. Everything is more deadly in the heavyweight division, but Ngannou is still terrifying. After his knock out of Overeem, I find myself locking the deadbolt at night. Following the win, it is rumored that Ngannou will get a title shot against Stipe Miocic. We hope this rumor is true, as the fight would promise to be amazing.

Ngannou has put the division and the world on notice. This man is dangerous and highly skilled. Everything is more deadly in the heavyweight division, but Ngannou is still terrifying. Henry Cejudo vs. Sergio Pettis

Cejudo vs. Pettis went the distance. Pettis is an up and comer who is loaded with talent. However, Cejudo is a crafty veteran who has spent most of this time at the top of the 125-pound division. This fight lived up to it’s billing. Both men are explosive and exciting, and they did not disappoint.

While Pettis did well on his feet, Cejudo took him down and held him down often. Pettis appeared to have no answer for the ground game of Cejudo, and not to take anything away from him, because many in the division cannot solve the Cejudo wrestling game. The final round was more of the same, dominating ground game from Cejudo. The judges felt same, Cejudo won by unanimous decision.

Eddie Alvarez vs. Justin Gaethje

One of the biggest fights of the evening was Alvarez vs. Gaethje. This fight did not get enough hype for my liking. Gaethje is the former long time World Series of Fighting titleholder. He has spent his career undefeated, which many felt was due to lack of competition in the World Series of Fighting promotion.

However, he takes on all challengers, and found himself squaring off against former champion, Eddie Alvarez. Like Gaethje’s mom told him, there would be days like this; he was still devastated by a knock out loss to Alvarez. However, this fight was epic!

Round one starts with Gaethje utilizing leg kicks that had immediate impact on Alvarez. Gaethje also found a home for his punches in the early stages of round one. However, as the round progressed, Alvarez invested in bodywork, which paid dividends not only at the end of round one, but in the later rounds as well.

Round two was perhaps the most exciting round. Gaethje went right back to leg kicks to open the round. Gaethje also found a home for his heavy right hand. However, as he was having success, Alvarez landed a big upper cut. As the round progressed, Alvarez began sitting behind his jab. The round ends with Alvarez once again putting in work to Gaethje’s body.

Round three was thrilling! Gaethje landed huge shots, including two uppercuts. It looked like Alvarez was going down. However, they got into a clench, and Alvarez lands a knee that ended Gaethje’s night. The knee came right through Gaethje’s guard, making Alvarez victorious by knock out victory.

Paul Felder vs. Charles Oliveira

Another fight on the card that went under the radar was Felder vs. Oliveira. Felder, who recently made his commentating debut, returned to action against the dangerous Oliveira.

Oliveira might have some of the most devastating leg kicks in the division. He opened up with them in round one. Oliveira also dragged Felder down, but Felder was able to get back to his feet. Felder had great success on his feet, as he made Oliveira eat a couple of left hooks.

In round two, Oliveira shot for a take down against Felder, with no success. It is unclear whether Oliveira was tired, or what was going on, but Felder’s attack was relentless as they rolled around on the ground. Felder gained the top position and began raining down elbows on Oliveira. The elbows eventually forced Oliveira to tap.

I am so proud of Felder, aka, the Other People’s Red Head. That is right folks, we gingers cheer for one another, when we are not stealing your souls. Of course, Felder has had his ups and downs, but this was a good win. He is really coming into his own, and hopefully a big name fight is next for Felder.

(Dustin Johnson Circa 1989)

"NoMasChenko" Defeats Rigondeaux

For the first time in the history of boxing, two, two time Olympic Gold Medal champions stepped into the ring to fight. Ukraine's Vasyl Lomachenko (10-1, 8 KOs) and the Cuban national hero, Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-1, 11 KOs) squared off for Lomachenko's WBO Super Featherweight Title in front of a capacity crowd at the Theater at Madison Square Garden. The championship bout was televised by ESPN, which meant fans watching the bout at home to listen to Stephen A. Smith provide his "expert" boxing opinion on the bout and fighter's careers.

In the weeks leading up to the bout, hardcore fight fans knew before a punch was thrown that the fighters would put their strong defensive skills on display over the course of the contest. Many boxing analysts gave the younger Lomachenko the slight advantage over the aging Rigondeaux, who moved up two weight classes for this matchup.

When the opening bell rang, the sell out crowd was so loud that it was difficult to hear ESPN's mediocre commentators call the fight... Which was not a bad thing! (Sorry, not sorry, Tim Bradley) Lomachenko's size and weight advantage were evident from the outset. Lomachenko weighed in seven pounds heavier than his undefeated opponent. The first two rounds were marked with the men feeling one another out, and locking up in holds that referee Steve Willis did a poor job in breaking up.

In between the second and third rounds, Willis appeared to have a conversation with both fighters about the clinches, and punches thrown by both fighters after coming out of these clinches. In the third round, Lomachenko landed three hard right upper cuts that appeared to catch Rigondeaux's attention. In the fourth round, Lomachenko put his speed on display, as he outclassed and toyed with the veteran fighter.

The fifth round was full of clinches that the referee again failed to control. Lomachenko who noticed that the referee could not control the bout up to this point, proceeded to land a number of dirty and illegal punches during clinches, and after holds were broken up. Lomachenko's strategy began to frustrate Rigondeaux in the sixth round, who also started to show his age in this round. A point was deducted from Rigondeaux during this round by referee, Steve Willis.

Rigondeaux refused to come out of his corner for the seventh round. The exhausted and frustrated fighter refused to continue for what appeared to be an injured left hand. Some analysts believed that this was a cop out for the number seven ranked pound-for-pound fighter who was being dominated on the scorecards up to that point of the bout. Lomachenko, the victor by TKO, put on yet another show of force for a nationally televised audience. Lomachenko, whose dominance in the ring has forced four straight fighters to refuse to come out of their corners, told ESPN that he may change his name to "NoMasChenko." In the post-fight interview, Rigondeaux claimed that his injured left hand prevented him from continuing in the bout, a statement which drew loud boos from those in attendance.
