Steve Ward
Not too long ago my brother, Matt Ward, reposted a WWE related article. This prompted me to reach out to him and ask, “Are you going to incorporate pro wrestling columns into the Weigh-In?” In typical “MW” fashion he told me that I could do them if I wanted to. Now before I get too carried away let’s set the record straight-yes, I understand the Weigh-In has traditionally been a forum for combat sports and I‘m not trying to discredit that but rather be a part of it‘s continued evolution and no, I’m not disillusioned under the belief that pro wrestling is a sport as opposed to sports entertainment despite the crossover fans have witnessed over the years where mixed martial artists and boxers from Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn, Tank Abbott, and Butterbean in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s to contemporaries such as Brock Lesnar, Ronda Rousey, and Bobby Lashley have tried their hand at pro wrestling with varying degrees of success.
One thing any fan of pro wrestling will tell you is, sure the match outcomes are predetermined, but the bumps these athletes take and the toll the business takes on their bodies is most certainly real and should never be undermined.
Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox now and refocus. My name is Steve Ward, I’ve never been a pro wrestler (even though I strongly considered it) and I don’t claim to be an “insider.” I’ve simply been an avid pro wrestling fan for over 30 years who is joining the Weigh-In team with my new column “The Buckle Bomb with Steve Ward.” This column will serve it’s readers with my perspective of the industry, as well as, previews and predictions of pay per views.
