Remembering a Philly Hero

In 1976, the movie Rocky hit the big screen and a hero was born. The film showed the heart and soul of Philadelphia pride, the personification of the underdog who could show the world he was so much more. A fighter who worked hard until the very end, and with a bit of dreaming and a lot of heart, goes the distance in a fight and wins in life. The thing is that the hero representing these noble values in that movie was the cinematic depiction of a real man. This man was a true hero of boxing, who was the heavyweight champion, and represented Philadelphia in the ring. He showed the world what hard work, dedication, and Philly heart is all about.

This man is the late “Smokin” Joe Frazier. Frazier was the greatest heavyweight to fight out of Philadelphia. Check out his record of 37 fights, of which he won 32 -- 27 by knock out! In 1970, Frazier won the heavyweight title by fighting Jimmy Ellis, who he knocked down twice in the fourth round, something that had never happened before in Ellis’ career. Frazier became the World Boxing Association (WBA) Heavyweight Champion and kept his title until 1973.

During his reign as champion, Frazier stepped into the ring with Muhammad Ali in 1971. Ali returned to the ring after a three-year absence, his boxing license having been revoked for his refusal to be drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. Ali used psychological warfare (which he was great at) to push Frazier to the edge, but what he really was doing was trying to hype the fight and get in Joe’s head, as he did with all of his opponents going back to Sonny Liston in the 60’s. On the night of their fight, it was skill, will, and hatred, at least on Joe’s part, that made for what was simply called "The Fight of the Century.”

Joe Frazier looked like a machine designed to do nothing but fight that night. In the eleventh round, he hurt Ali badly, and I won’t spoil the round for you but keep an eye out, because at one point Joe Frazier knocked Ali down with a great left hook that left Ali's jaw looking like he was trying to harbor a baseball in his mouth.

At the end of the night, Frazier won a unanimous decision, becoming the first man to ever beat the self-proclaimed “greatest of all time”, Muhammad Ali. Frazier eventually lost his title to George Foreman, one of, if not, the hardest puncher in boxing history, in a fight that only lasted a few rounds. He went on to lose two rematches with Muhammad Ali including the “Thrilla in Manila", but their fights were arguably the most epic trilogy of fights in heavyweight boxing history.

With all his accomplishments, Frazier should have gotten so much respect in the boxing world, especially in Philadelphia. Sadly, only after Frazier’s death were there plans made to erect a statue in his honor. An almost eerie irony is that the sculptor chosen to create the statue, Larry Nowlan, died at age 48 shortly after he was given the assignment. Then there was then back and forth drama over Joe Frazier’s gym. Last I checked the gym was purchased by Broad Enterprises Group L.L.C. in 2011, and was then leased to a discount furniture store that now appears to be closed. After efforts from preservationists and local politicians, Joe Frazier's Gym was added to the National Register of Historic Places in April 2013. In April 2018, a portion of Glenwood Avenue near the gym was named "Smokin' Joe Frazier Boulevard".

Frazier has two legacies. First, he is a great example that hard work and passion are not always recognized and rewarded like they should be in life. The other legacy, the one I want to remember Joe Frazier for, is he was not only what Philly boxing and sports is all about, but he was what a fighter in life is all about. He was an exceedingly kind and respectful man, but the night he faced Ali, he showed how dangerous he could be. Joe Frazier is a reminder that when life gives you big challenges take everything you have and knock them down.

There are a number of reasons why, at times, Frazier gets overlooked by sports fans outside of the world of boxing. Joe had a feud with one of the most beloved athletes (not just boxers) of all time. Muhammad Ali was named the “Sportsman of the Century” back in 1999 by Sports illustrated. So, it is not a huge surprise Joe never got recognition of Ali (most athletes never did or will).

I would suggest watching the documentary “Thrilla in Manilla”. This film does a good job of telling Joe’s side of the story during the epic trilogy and feud with Ali. It also tells Joe’s story in a way where you see he was a great and humble guy, who not just carved out a niche for himself in boxing, he knocked down the door of boxing immortality with his left hook.

What happened to the legacy of Smokin’ Joe is terribly disappointing. The fact that the statue of Rocky Balboa, which appeared in the third and fifth Rocky movies, is perceived as a symbol of Philadelphia’s heart is not a disgrace, it just leaves out the story of one of the greats in heavyweight history in his own city. A statue of Joe Frazier should have been erected prior to the great champion’s death. The next time you are in Philadelphia, remember to check out Joe Frazier’s statue at the Xfinity Live! in South Philly in addition to the Rocky statue, both are well worth a visit.

I think Joe Frazier should have gotten a lot more love in the city that prides itself on brotherly love. To the boxing public that knows anything about great heavyweights, Joe Frazier is a name that always comes up. Randall “Tex” Cobb (the heavyweight contender that made Howard Cosell quit boxing on air after watching him take an unnecessary beating for an entire fight against then champion Larry Holmes) was a guy who wanted to learn how to fight. As the story goes, he took a bus to Philadelphia from Texas. When he got off the bus, he saw two guys, who he referred to as “two winos” or something like that, start fighting. When Cobb saw they were throwing perfect left hooks, he thought to himself, I came to the right place. In the land of great left hooks, Joe Frazier had the greatest left hook of anyone from Philadelphia and certainly one of the best in all of boxing history.

Creed II is a Must See

Finally! The real People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

With the holiday season underway, good movies get released. Creed II is no exception to the holiday movie release rule. The People’s Redhead went and saw it on opening day, and it is fantastic.

DISCLOSURE:  No spoilers below, but even if there were, shut the fuck up and quit bitching!

Creed II starts off by highlighting the success of Adonis Johnson (aka Adonis Creed), played by Michael B Jordan. As one would suspect, Creed is floating along and then he encounters tremendous obstacles that he must overcome. The film is generally based off this premise. However, I felt the need to write this film review after reading some of the other bullshit reviews being published.

I have read that this film is not as good as the first Creed. What a fucking original thought, wow. Sequels to films are not expected to surpass originals, but rather compliment them, which this film easily does. Further, we at The Weigh-In are not going to pretend to be on the same level of review of established cinema experts such as Sisquo or Eggbert (mispronunciation intentional you rubes). We are not changing the well-established landscape of film critique, but we want to discuss everything combat sports related. Currently, film reviews seemed to be dictated by a bunch of desk warriors who want to bash everything in order to elicit readership. To this, I say, go fuck yourself!

Michael B. Jordan’s portrayal of Adonis Johnson-Creed has displayed layers that I never considered while watching the widely celebrated Rocky series. Adonis Creed struggles to carve his own path and is not only facing intense competition, but he is essentially fighting the ghost of his father’s legacy. Jordan captures this and his approach to the character puts the viewer through the full spectrum of emotion. For those of you reading this, I cannot quite articulate Jordan’s performance well enough to do him justice.

I want you all to think of a time you were watching a film and the hair on the back neck of stood up. I want you think about a film that inspired you to go out and try what you just watched on the big screen. Think about a time that your eyes were watery and you held back tears. Michael B. Jordan makes the viewer feel all of these things because of his brilliant performance. It also does not hurt that the man is super jacked. (See his workout routine below)

On top of Jordan’s performance, which is next level, let us not forget about his supporting cast. Bianca, played by Tessa Thompson is more prevalent in this film and her performance keeps getting better. In Creed II, Bianca plays a more vital role to Creed’s life and the parallel between what she is going through as compared to Apollo’s wife (Creed’s mother), is understated and brilliant. Thompson is showing a wide range of depth in her own character that gives the audience no choice but to feel for her position.

Last but certainly not least, Sly Stallone once again crushes his role as Creed’s uncle. The entire film has magnificent foreshadowing into the magnitude of the decisions Rocky made during his own storied career. Rocky cares for Adonis so much and does not want to see him make the same mistakes. However, at the same time, Rocky sees Adonis has something more, something Apollo did not have and Rocky is fully invested in young Creed.

Some other honorable mentions in this film is the return of Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren. One can only wonder what this means for the series moving forward. Lundgren looks great by the way, shout out to the Russian Gas!  Brigitte Nielsen even returns to the series, which wow! Shout out to Brigitte, she needs to consume some Russian Gas!

Wood Harris returns in Creed II and crushes his role as Tony “Little Duke” Burton. He trains Creed and hopefully this will be the case moving forward because I am a huge Wood fan… That’s what she said. Harris is a great actor who murders every role. Some of you readers may recall him as Avon Barksdale from the HBO hit series, The Wire.

Creed II is excellent and in today’s big box office superhero release bullshit, a film worth actually paying to see and not illegally downloading. Right, you all want me to believe that you are not currently on some Russian website trying to download Creed II, have more sense people.

I am not going to rate Creed II with a letter grade or star count like other sites. I am just merely telling everyone that the film compliments the first film and I think the characters reach new levels of depth that is truly brilliant. I would pay to see this film multiple times and that should speak volumes. After all, us redheads do not get out much, on account of the UV rays and all that.

Go see Creed II and be glad you listened to us here at The Weigh-In.

Special Thanks To:

Michael B. Jordan

Sly Stallone

Wood Harris

Tessa Thompson (You all know what you did and we thank you)

Dustin's Corner: Jon “Bones” Jones Popped Hot and the World has Lost All Meaning

Do you hear me knocking? Well, let me in! Finally! The People’s Red Head has come back to The Weigh-In!

We are breaking news people! Jon Jones failed a drug test after defeating Daniel Cormier at UFC 214. This news has shocked the MMA world. Reactions to Jones failed test results are all over the map. No one knows what to believe anymore. The next thing we will be told is that Lance Armstrong was juicing during his Tour de France domination. To think Jon “Bones” Jones would cheat is like finding out Hulk Hogan was juicing, brother. I refuse to even discuss whether “Sly” Stallone was on something during the Rocky era.

For those living under a rock, Mr. Jones has been a dominant force in the UFC. He was arguably the pound-for-pound, scariest man on the planet. However, the tests results following his performance at UFC 214 tested positive for some sort of banned substance. It was confirmed that cocaine was not in his system, but in the words of Matthew McConaughey, it would be a lot cooler if it was. Cocaine is something we could wrap our heads around. Mr. Jones has constantly denied steroid use during the course of his career.

Due to Jon’s history of substance abuse, the result of his recent drug test could lead to a suspension of four years. He is in his prime, and a four-year suspension would essentially be a career ender. His options would be limited to fighting somewhere overseas where the testing is less than current. This is a polite way of saying he would be reduced to fighting in the wild west of combat sports where competitors enter the ring with syringes dangling from their buttocks.

As a huge fan of Mr. Jones I feel it is critical to remind everyone that not all the facts are in. All we know is that Jon had an A and B failed sample that I believe was taken prior to UFC 214. Mr. Jones has failed in the past due to some sort of tainted supplement and I am hopeful that this is the issue in this matter. Has anyone ever seen the list of banned substance out on the USADA website? The list can be found at:  https://www.usada.org/substances/prohibited-list/athlete-guide-2017-prohibited-list/. The last list I saw of this magnitude was everything my ex wanted me to change about myself... Trust me, that list had USADA beat!

The Jones' camp has been very quiet. Everyone believes this is because he is guilty, but it is most likely due to the fact that the investigation is ongoing. It is important to remember that not all of the facts are in. I am pulling for Mr. Jones. I could not imagine MMA without Mr. Jones. Outside of Conor, Jones is the biggest name in the sport.

Another important factor that has gone mostly unreported is the impact this result has had on Daniel Cormier. Cormier has been a consummate professional and ambassador of MMA. Cormier dominates the sport with the exception of fighting against Jones. Fans continue to boo Cormier who may very well be the best example of a role model in all of combat sports. It is a true shame. Cormier is an inspiration to us all.

As the Jones' results continue to unfold, it will be more than interesting. Here at The Weigh-In Boxing Blog and Podcast, we will keep you posted as the information becomes available. Our thoughts go out to Mr. Jones and we wish Daniel Cormier continued success.

People’s Red Head Out!

*Special thanks to USADA.org and the great one, Chael Sonnen, for the some of the information contained within this article.

ESPN 30 for 30 Presents Tommy

ESPN's 30 for 30 is set to release the latest installment of their sports documentary series tomorrow evening. The documentary, entitled Tommy, focuses on the life and career of world heavyweight boxing champion and actor, Tommy Morrison. Morrison is arguably best known for two accomplishments during his career; his 1990 acting role as Tommy Gunn in Rocky V, and his 1993 victory over George Foreman for the WBO Heavyweight Title.

Morrison was diagnosed with HIV in 1996, after the Nevada Athletic Commission conducted a pre-fight blood test on the former heavyweight champion. Throughout his life, Morrison took a number of tests for the virus, many of which turned up negative. In the years leading up to his death in 2013, Morrison continued to fight professionally with controversy swirling around the boxing world about his health.

Morrison last fought on February 9, 2008 in Mexico where he defeated Matt Weishaar (6-2-2, 4 KOs) via a third round technical knockout. On September 1, 2013, it was reported that Morrison died of cardiac arrest, resulting from multi-organ failure due to septic shock caused by a Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. Morrison was 44-years-old at the time of his death.

Tommy will air on September 27th at 8:00 PM EST on ESPN. Make sure to set your DVRs and alerts... ESPN2 rarely disappoints viewers with the 30 for 30 series!

For more information on this documentary, check out the official ESPN page for Tommy.
